A History of Judo
Judo is a Japanese martial art created in 1882 by Kano Jigoro, who combined elements of traditional jujutsu with mental discipline. Jujutsu itself evolved from sumo and was developed by samurai for close combat.
After Japan’s modernisation in the Meiji era, Kano preserved and transformed jujutsu into judo, founding a new school at just 21 years old.
He later introduced judo to the world, promoting it as both a practical and respectful martial art, and helped establish it as an Olympic sport.
Kano believed that judo should not only train the body but also build character and contribute to society. His teachings emphasised mutual respect, safety, and continuous self-improvement.
Today, judo is practiced worldwide by people of all ages and remains one of the most popular martial arts in the world.
